I submitted this illustration for the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, Special Competition, in 2010 and it was rejected. The Grammar of Figures Competition invited artists from all over the world to submit illustrations based on one of the works of Gianni Rodari. I based my illustration on Rodari’s book One in Seven, which tells a story of seven children from around the world, who in the end become one person and so there is no war. My illustration is called Seven in One, which depicts seven animals in one body. The polar bear represents himself but also the ocean. The six other animals are the whale, sea lion, salmon, sea turtle, walrus, and penguin. The polar bear crosses the ice, which is beginning to crack under his weight because of global warming, and all of the animals are imperiled.
